Peckham’s art scene

by Laurie Eggleston on 23 August, 2009

This summer my new local has become Frank’s Café and Campari Bar, attached to the Bold Tendencies III sculpture park exhibition, on the roof of the Rye Lane car park. This is not only the best place to go out in Peckham, but in my opinion, all of London. I can certainly think of nowhere with a view that even comes close; from Battersea Power Station in the West, to the Dome in the East, every London landmark is visible.

This bar and sculpture park is special and they have really put Peckham on the map. Through word-of-mouth alone they’ve succeeded in bringing people to Peckham from all over London, many of which for the first time. Everyone I’ve taken along have been suitably impressed.

This is a great demonstration of the potential Peckham has. It’s a confident statement that is proud of its surroundings. There are plenty of young, artistic and imaginitive people in Peckham who are challenging the negative stereotype that is still all too-often applied to our area.

There’s a good Evening Standard article which gives lots of information about the local art scene here: http://tiny.cc/ha7m2 (Although any journalist who claims that Peckham ‘is the new Hoxton’ clearly doesn’t get Peckham)
It’s great that Southwark council support things like this – the Hannah Barry gallery have been given the use of the car park for free. In return they’ve brought people to Peckham and wowed them.
And it’s another example why having the transport links connecting Peckham to central London is so important. We need to make it easier for people to come to Peckham, not harder.
It’s only open until the 26th September, so you really should check it out if you haven’t already. I also recommend going on a clear night and watching the sunset – it’s breathtaking.
